Ignoring the spoiler-based wank for a second, I am just fascinated from a historical perspective. I mean, it wasn’t that long ago.
~15 years ago, you’d have very few shows that had gay characters or even acknowledged that gay people existed. When you did have one, it was either for a very short stint or usually your token, largely asexual gay character. It was kind of impossible to hope for a real relationship because they couldn’t have any more than just the one really, because that would just be insanity.
Things evolved, of course, and you started to actually have *gasp* gay couples! But it was, of course, a big f-ing deal for the networks about any sort of affection. It was a fight every time. And it was pretty much always just the two, perfectly matched.
Now, we have a little show called Glee. (I totally just typed “gay” first. Freudian.) We have a whole spectrum. There’s Kurt, Blaine, Santana, Brittany, Karofsky, Sebastian, and more minor recurring characters like Hiram, LeRoy, and Sandy (I’d like to ignore, but, well…). Then you have one-offs like Jeremiah and at least one of the NYADA hopeful kids. And now talk of adding another gay character?
Just, wow. It pleases me.
I know there are issues, and we all still bitch about the lack of equal treatment. And people will probably be annoyed that I’m happy just for significant progress. It’s certainly not over in that war, but seriously, things are changing quickly and it’s awesome.
